LOST IN LA MANCHA
CASE STUDY : LOST IN LA MANCHA
“This study focuses on the collaborative nature of the production process and the specialist roles within that process. It also focuses on the film making process, looking at the production process and the complex issues faced by those working in the film industry.”
While watching the film list all the successes and all the failures of the production.
1. What do you think directing a feature film might involve? Write a list of the possible responsibilities a director might have.
2. What personal qualities might a director need in order to become successful in the film industry?
3. Name your favourite director and give a list of their films.
4. List as many production roles that were documented at each stage of production in LOST IN LA MANCHA on a flow chart.
• Divide a blank page into three parts; pre-production, production & post-production and list what jobs are undertaken at each stage.
• Use one colour to indicate all of the roles/jobs you observed in LOST IN LA MANCHA and then use another colour to add in any others you can think of that may not have been shown in the documentary.
5. At which point does casting occur? How does the initial casting process begin?
6. Why is the casting important, and why is it significant that Johnny Depp is cast as a main character?
7. Do Hollywood producers seem willing to take risks? How do you think this affects what type of film is produced in Hollywood?

Update...
In the last few sessions we've been watching some DVDs about production roles in the media.
On Friday August 7 the class watched a doco from 1991 about a work day in the production of THE AGE newspaper. It contextualised the production roles and was also an insight to the changing technology of the Media through time.
On Monday August 10 the class watched the special feature doco on the making of the Australian zombie-horror-scifi-comedy UNDEAD.
If any students who missed these classes would like to watch the docos please let me know and I'll organise a screening for you.
